“Are you actually going to eat that?”

That’s what the cashier at the supermarket said to me this morning as he was ringing up my order. He was referring to the giant bag o’ kale I’d been excited to find.

“Yes,” I told him.

“I thought that’s the stuff they put on plates at fancy restaurants to make it look nice.”t’

I had to think about that for a second because I hadn’t had any coffee yet. “Yes,” I finally agreed. “They do use it for that. I cook it…like spinach….it’s kinda bitter, but it’s good.”

“I didn’t think people actually ate it.”

I bit my tongue and refrained from asking him why he thought the store sold it.

  1. I don’t know that I’ve ever had kale. What do you eat it with normally?

  2. I’ve never eaten kale. Of course, I’m very bland. I don’t even like salad with arugula in it.

    Jennifer — I eat kale as a veggie side dish. Yesterday I wilted it with carmelized onions and carrots along with horseradish crusted salmon and chili/ginger spiced sweet potatoes.

    B.E. — I’m a fan of most greens, but they do take getting used to. I like collard greens and dandelion greens too…
